It was the "Authorized Biography Of The Beach Boys" by Byron Preiss.

It was Oct. '77 when Byron and I were at MIU for a week. The tape did not come to us from Dennis. But it was sent to us by another person in the BB organization.

I heard a story about the Denny compilation on the blue board, saying that an author was writing a Beach Boys biography at the time, and had requested to hear some Smile material for his research. Denny made that comp reel for him. Not sure if the story is true. Wish I could remember which book it was though.....

Dennis was interviewed by Robert W. Morgan in 1978. Morgan did alot of interviews with the guys. The tapes use to be passed around by collectors (I had the interview at one time). Dennis says "I found the fire tapes!" and says how it happened.

Since Brother was sold that year, I assumed that Dennis was getting it ready for sale. He would (according to those around at the time) go through the tape library and listen to unlabeled tapes to see what was what. The actual tape comp reels had 70's material on them as well.

In reference to the Denny 78 comp reel: Was the Dennis story quoted in an interview by Robert W Morgan, or is this from another source?

There were probably a number of reels put together of the SMILE material, but I think you are refering to the two reels that leaked to the collectors circuit in the early 80s. They are as follows (with info on where to get those versions of the songs):

Comp Reel #1 (My numbering means nothing!)

Our Prayer (10/4/66) - Vigotone CD
Wonderful (10/6/66) - Box Set
Cabin Essence (10/11/66) - Vigotone CD
Cabin Essence (12/6/66) - Vigotone CD
Child Is Father of the Man (10/12/66) - Vigotone CD
Do You Like Worms (no date listed) - Vigotone CD

All the above tracks are also on the 2nd SMILE Vinyl boot (where vig got them from) and are on (in order) the Rocking Rarities CD.

Comp Reel #2
Do You Like Worms - only on first SMILE vinyl LP
Fire (no sound effects) - Vigotone CD
Fire (sound effects) - Vigotone CD
Can't Wait Too Long (three pieces) - Journals Vol. 1 Disc 6
Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine (no vocal) - SOT Vol 17
"false" Barnyard - Heroes And Vibrations, SOT Vol 17

The second reel was compiled by Dennis Wilson on Oct. 2, 1978 and the box is labeled The Fire Tapes. Dennis told interviewer Robert W. Morgan that he had found the tracks while "cleaning out" Brother Studios. Given the date of 1978, it seems likely that Dennis was preparing the studio for sale to jazz musician Tom Scott (who appeared with Brian on Johnny Rivers 1975 remake of Help Me Rhonda).

There is a debate going on as to when the first reel was compiled. Des thinks that it was Dec. 1966. Having spoke to him at length about this, I think he is right.

Hope this helps.

Just thought someone could provide a list of the various Comp Reels that are known, when they are from and what they contain?

Is that a bit of a mammoth request???????
